Three Tips for Successfully Promoting Apprenticeships Online

It is National Apprenticeship Week this week and from Monday 3rd  to Friday 7th February. Throughout the week there are hundreds of stakeholder events taking place across England to celebrate and raise awareness of apprenticeships. To play our part, we thought we would give you our top tips for promoting apprenticeships online.

1. Localise your apprenticeship data

There are thousands of national apprenticeship opportunities online. However, most people are only willing to consider apprenticeship vacancies close to home. Although it is possible to filter national systems to view local opportunities, people are far more likely to interact with apprenticeships available in their area when they are displayed on local websites. Local apprenticeships are deemed relevant, trustworthy and reliable – and our research shows that people like to see apprenticeships with employers they recognise.

2. Make sense of the Information

To increase awareness of apprenticeships, you need to focus on making sense of information rather than creating more new materials. There is loads of great information out there about apprenticeships that will be immensely helpful to the stakeholders you are targeting.  However, this information is often hard to identify because it exists in so many different places.  We suggest bringing the relevant information into one centralised place, creating clear user journeys and using helpful tools like dropdown menus to help users find what they’re looking for.

3. Nudge your online audience into apprenticeships

Can you believe it? National Apprenticeship Week is in its 13th year! Thanks to all the hard work that has gone into promoting apprenticeships, each year we are seeing more and more young people considering them as an alternative to university. However, more work is needed to make people take apprenticeships seriously. To do this, we recommend creating a series of apprenticeship nudges. This means integrating apprenticeship information into other areas of your websites. For example, you might want to include a ‘Search Apprenticeships’ feature on a jobs or work experience page. This can encourage people to look at apprenticeships when they didn’t necessarily intend to do so.

Apprenticeships provide a pathway into a career with training built on experience. The benefits of apprenticeships have been seen by both the apprentice and the employer, with 389,200 apprenticeship starts reported to date in the 2018/19 academic year alone. The popularity of apprenticeship courses continues to grow, comparing to 369,700 reported apprenticeship starts in the equivalent period in 2017/18.
